Tearing down an old shed can be dangerous so if you aren’t going to hire our shed removal specialists we urge you to take extreme caution.
A: Wear Safety Goggles
B: Wear a good pair of construction gloves
C: Work boots with a steel toe preferably
D: A hard hat
E: Make sure that there is no electrical or water service connected to the shed (If so you need to have a licensed plumber or electrician disconnect the service).
Step 1: We prefer to start on the roof first. Now it makes sense if you aren’t pressed for time to strip the roof of all of the shingles. This will take a lot of weight off of the structure. You’ll likely need a ladder and some tools to remove the shingles. There is also likely tar paper underneath that may be removed but is not necessary. However, we prefer to make things faster and immediately begin removing the roof with the shingles in attached. This can be difficult but once you have done this enough it gets pretty easy. We take a pry bar and wedge it between the rafters and the roof close to where it’s nailed and pry upward towards the roof thus prying the roof away from the rafter. We work the whole plank until it is far enough out to where we can take the pry bar or a 2×4 and ram it into the plank popping it upward and outward.
Step 2:
Once the roof is completely off you should start on the walls. Sometimes they are easy to just kick out and other times they can be difficult. There should be trim pieces on the corners and up towards the roof. These need to be removed first before the walls can be kicked out. These are easy to remove with a pry bar. It’s easier to remove the wall from the bottom first so it doesn’t get hung up on the rafters on the top.
Here is a pic with the walls removed, as you can see the roof was giving me a hard time towards the front and i decided to cut the roof in the front to makes things go faster,
Here you can see the last section of the roof before i removed it .
Step 3:
Once the walls have been removed you will be left with the front section with the doors and just the frame in the rear. And the ceiling rafters. This step is where we cut out the ceiling supports. There is no perfect way to do this but I do start off from the center peak section of the roof and work my way down each side. You have to be careful that you don’t get hit in the head and wear safety goggles and be cautious using the reciprocating saw overhead. Once all of the rafters have been removed we can proceed to step 4.
Step 4:
Now we can begin cutting away the front section of the shed. As you can see the doors can remain intact. You can simply cut the top corners away and the front section will fall flat on it’s face. If there are windows mounted on the front or side be careful of the glass breaking or you can simply cut out the windows and remove them before you drop the wall, This part is easy the front is the heaviest and falls down on it’s own weight.
Step 5:
Pro Tip: when you are taking down the walls I prop some 2×4’s against the remaining back wall so the wall doesn’t fall in on you when you finally cut away all of it’s support. The rest is rather easy, you can choose to cut the pieces up smaller or haul them away as is.
Here is a picture of another shed I’ve done as you can see those walls fall down pretty easy so you have to be very careful. If you would like to have a shed demolition specialist at Greenwich Junk Haul come to you and do this service or you need a free estimate for removal please give us a call.
